Poker is a game of cards where the highest-ranking hand wins. The cards are dealt out in rounds with betting between each deal. The first round of betting in a hand of poker starts with the player to the left of the dealer. The next player then places a bet that is at least as large as the amount of money placed by the player before him. This is called raising. This process continues until all of the players have raised their bets to the same level and then the remaining cards are revealed. The player who has the best five-card poker hand wins the pot.

After the flop is dealt the dealer puts three more cards on the board that anyone can use. This is called the turn. Then the last round of betting occurs, again with one or more betting intervals depending on the poker variant being played.

Once the river is dealt your decision to check, bet or raise can only be based on the realized value of your cards. It is usually unwise to bluff here because your opponent’s hands have already been exposed and you can no longer improve your own.
