The Basics of Poker

Poker

Poker is a classic card game, played between two to four people. While the exact origins of the game are unknown, many believe it to be a combination of various earlier games. According to one theory, the word “Poker” was first attached to a cheating game on a riverboat in Mississippi. According to the story, the players used a deck of twenty cards, with the Aces being used only to make the best hands.

A player starts the game by making an ante, which varies from game to game. During the game, each player bets into a pot that is situated in the middle. The player with the best hand wins the pot. The betting occurs in a clockwise order, until all players call or fold.

In some games, the lowest possible hand is five of a kind. However, in other games, the ace may count as the lowest card. The lowest five of a kind hand is 6-4-3-2-A. If more than one person has this hand, the higher card wins the hand. The lowest pair is a pair of aces.

The goal of poker is to make the highest hand possible. This is achieved by combining one of the player’s cards with four of the table’s cards. To win, a player must have the highest poker hand.
